Animals are sentient beings with intrinsic moral status, and deserve to be free from direct and indirect human-caused harm.
If you believe this, as the Greens do, then you’ll want to know more about the policy package on animal rights and welfare that we’ve just released. It focuses on protecting animals in their wild state, through safeguarding the habitats and ecology that sustains them, and it strengthens mechanisms that protect our pets and farm animals as well.
Legislation, education and funding all play a part in enhancing animal welfare, and the Greens initiative includes things like funding an awareness campaign on the importance of cat containment, creating legislation to ban the sale of shark fin products, and securing long-term funding for wildlife carer groups.
