Applications are now open for new members to join the ACT Climate Change Council.
Minister for Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury is encouraging experts in the fields of zero emissions transport and public health to apply to join the ACT Climate Change Council (the Council).
The Council advises the ACT Government on the ambitious program to make the ACT resilient to the effects of climate change and to reduce our emissions to net zero by 2045.
“The ACT Government is a world leader when it comes to taking climate action and the advice we receive from the ACT Climate Change Council helps us build resilience and find the best path towards net zero emissions,” Minister Rattenbury said.
“The Council includes members from across the ACT community, business and industry sectors. This brings diverse skills and perspectives which is crucial as we all work together to find solutions.
“We are particularly interested in applications from people with expertise in transport planning and public health.
“This is because the transport sector contributes to approximately 60% of the ACT’s emissions, and we have also seen how climate change can vastly affect our community’s health, particularly through what our community experienced during the 2019-20 bushfire season.”
You can find more information on the desired skills and details on how to apply on the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development website. Applications close 2 June 2021.
Quotes attributable to Professor Penny Sackett, Chair of the ACT Climate Change Council:
“The role of the ACT Climate Change Council becomes more and more vital every year, as the need to act on climate change becomes more urgent, and the advantages of doing so become more apparent. Council's effectiveness has derived from the diverse skill set of its members and its strength from direct reporting to the Minister as an independent statutory body.
“I urge you to consider how you can add to that diverse skill set by applying to join the Council as it provides leadership to assist in shaping a healthy, sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for the ACT."
