‘Don’t Punish Those on the Lowest Incomes Just to Balance the Books’: Rattenbury

2025-02-07

Lines attributable to Shane Rattenbury, Leader of the ACT Greens:

“As the ACT Government signals looming ‘tough decisions’ and possible service cuts in light of the mid-year Budget update, there must be a clear focus on protecting those doing it toughest in our city.

“During this cost of living crisis, so many Canberrans are struggling to keep up. This is exactly why the ACT Greens cannot and will not support cuts to services that are supporting those who need them most in our community.

“Labor cannot punish those on the lowest income in our city just to try and balance the books. The Greens will be closely scrutinising the next budget to protect current services and ensure they do not cut essential services.

“Canberra really is a two speed city–while some people might be living comfortably, those on lower incomes really find it tough.

“The Greens believe that must be taken into account by this government in any future budget decisions.

“Food relief services, public housing and primary health care–these are the sort of services that struggling Canberrans need to access.

“These services should not only be immune from Budget cuts, but in fact should be the future areas of growth in funding.
