Tim Hollo, Greens candidate for Canberra, said today:
"Canberrans are mighty sick of private companies coming in and steamrolling over community concerns. The idea that Wing would announce acquisition of a permanent site just days after the Legislative Assembly set up an inquiry into their test run due to all the complaints, beggars belief."
"This is part of a growing anti-democratic trend of 'disruptive' corporations deliberately setting up shop before governments have a chance to set the rules, making it much harder to regulate them after the fact."
"We need the pause button to be pressed immediately on any further developments until after the inquiry has heard from the community."
"After keeping our city free of outdoor ads last year with a record response to the Assembly, Canberrans will not support a big corporation privatising our skies," Tim concluded.
Tim Hollo coordinated the Ad Free Canberra campaign against expanding outdoor advertising and the privatisation of public space in the ACT. The Assembly inquiry into the proposed expansion of outdoor ads received the highest number of submissions of any Assembly inquiry ever, the vast majority against outdoor advertising in Canberra.
Greens amendments to the drones inquiry motion in the Assembly mean that the inquiry will now also look at the potential impact of drones on greenhouse gas emissions, and will investigate information privacy issues.
