More concrete, less trees on the cards at Weston Creek?

The ACT Greens call on the ACT Government to clarify its position on a ‘temporary’ car park at Cooleman Court, following media reports that the car park could now be made permanent despite strong opposition from the community.

The ACT Greens oppose a car park at the site, and believe that open green space should be maintained.

“The local community use tell us that what local residents want is what they’ve already got - open green space and trees. Once trees are gone, and those left suffer damage from cars driving over their roots every day, it will be too easy for the Government to just make it permanent and give us more asphalt where we now have grass,” says ACT Greens candidate for Murrumbidgee, Emma Davidson.

“The ACT Government needs to come clean on its plans for Cooleman Park, and for the Weston Group Centre.”

“Weston Creek Community Council has identified a range of alternatives to increase car parking spaces without paving over a park,” Ms Davidson said. Let’s involve the community in finding solutions, and have some genuine conversations about what’s possible and how to make it work.”

“A little oasis of clean, green space in our urban environment would help make Weston a greener Group Centre,” Ms Davidson added.
