Response to Israel's planned retribution attacks on Palestine, by Shane Rattenbury, Leader ACT Greens

2023-10-12

Hi everyone,

In response to questions that have been put to me this week I feel compelled to state clearly the ACT Greens condemn the attacks by Hamas, and like everyone across the world we are absolutely horrified by the targeting of civilians.

The dreadful events of this week continue to be confronting and heartbreaking.

This war will bring pain and grief to so many. All perpetrators must be held to account for their actions in accordance with international law.

The right to resist occupation must be exercised in accordance with international law. The premeditated targeting of civilians by Hamas violates these laws. The bombing of Palestine civilians in response by the state of Israel violates these laws.

The context of this escalating conflict cannot be ignored. For there to be a just and lasting peace there must be an end to the state of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories.

I want to reassure you that the Greens reject and condemn all forms of violence, especially against civilians. Peace and non-violence are core to our values. They are founding principles of our party.

We seek justice and human rights in Palestine and Israel. Around Australia we have deeply discussed this issue and hold very clear principles, goals and calls in relation to our capacity to help achieve it.

For many people in the ACT this issue may not be what motivated you to engage with politics, but I encourage you to read how the Greens aim to rectify injustice in ways that will allow both Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace: https://greens.org.au/sites/default/files/2023-06/AG%20Pal%20resolution.pdf

As we all seek peace and an end to war crimes and fighting, we want to be clear there is absolutely no place for racism or antisemitism.

We are committed to working with all cultural groups to ensure that Canberra remains a safe and welcoming place for all people.

Shane
