Statement on consent law reform

2021-06-21

The exposure draft released by Dr Marisa Paterson regarding consent law reform, including a positive model of consent, is welcomed by the ACT Greens, said ACT Greens Leader, Shane Rattenbury

“My colleague Caroline Le Couteur initiated this reform last term, presenting two bills during her time in the Assembly. The ACT Greens were frustrated that the other parties did not support the model of affirmative consent that was put forward at the time.

“As Caroline said during her valedictory speech, ‘this remains important unfinished business for the ACT’.

“That is why the ACT Greens took the issues to the 2020 ACT Election, and added it to the Parliamentary and Governing Agreement with ACT Labor.

“Now as the Attorney-General, I look forward to working with Dr Paterson, and with the Government’s Sexual Assault Law Reform Working Group, to consider this draft and advance an effective affirmative and communicative model of consent.”
