Cladding remediation work on four additional ACT Government buildings has now been completed, bringing the total of remediated ACT Government buildings to 14.
Canberra High School, Howard Florey House, Civic Youth Centre and ACT Magistrates Court have all concluded, while remediation works continue on the nine other ACT Government owned buildings found to have combustible cladding. The final remediation work is on track to be completed by late 2022.
“The safety of Canberrans is of utmost importance to the ACT Government, which is why we are reducing the risk of potentially combustible cladding,” Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction, Rebecca Vassarotti said.
“While our work on ACT Government building is ongoing, we continue to support eligible owners corporations to replace potentially combustible cladding with our first phase of the Private Buildings Cladding Scheme, which was launched in July 2021.
"The ACT Government has assisted eligible owners corporations by paying 50% of the costs of testing and assessing their buildings’ cladding (up to $20,000 ex GST), with 16 buildings currently being assessed.
“Phase two of the scheme, which will see remediation works undertaken on eligible buildings, will be facilitated by a concessional loan which will provide financial support for eligible building owners to undertake the removal of cladding from their buildings.
“We are now seeking further information from financial services firms in relation to the detailed structuring and administration of the concessional loans, and have released a RFI to financial services firms through TendersACT. We want to ensure the loans are set up in a way that will deliver the best possible outcomes for all involved.
“Phase two of the Scheme is expected to be launched in 2022.”
Applications for phase one the Private Buildings Cladding Scheme remain open until 21 July 2022. Owners corporations are encouraged to contact claddingprogram@act.gov.au as early as possible.

To ensure minimal waste, 100% of materials provided to the recycling supplier from four ACT Government remediation projects were diverted from landfill and instead were recycled, with a total of 5,333kg of combustible cladding panels recycled from Arawang Primary School, Canberra High School, Melrose High School and Yarralumla Primary School.
The recycled polyethylene material was able to be used in the production of plastic products, such as concrete bar chairs, flower pots, commercial landscape drains and pits, piping, plastic pallets and bottles.
The aluminium from these panels was recycled and used in the production of aluminium products such as window frames, park benches and building products. By using these recycled materials, emissions from the production of these products were reduced by 69.6 tonnes.
