Make no mistake, this is a climate disaster. Extreme heatwaves are made worse by the climate crisis, which is fueled by mining and burning coal and gas.
2023 smashed the record for the world’s hottest year by a huge margin, hitting 1.48C above pre-industrial levels.
Heatwaves are dangerous. More people die in heatwaves than any other disaster. It’s the most vulnerable in our society who suffer most in a heat wave.
Labor knows this. Yet the Victorian Labor Government still supports new coal and gas projects. There are over a dozen new gas drilling projects on the cards in Victoria. They are making the crisis worse.
The only way to keep people safe is to stop adding more fuel to the climate fire: no more coal and gas.
