Transport is Victoria’s biggest growing source of emissions, so we need to rapidly shift away from expensive, polluting cars to cleaner, cheaper, climate-friendly transport like cycling and walking.
But right now too many of our roads are not safe enough for bike riders, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. The recent tragic death of a cyclist in inner Melbourne is another devastating reminder that Victoria needs safer bike lanes and footpaths.
The Greens are calling on the Victorian Labor Government to invest in safe bike and pedestrian networks as part of its 2022 Budget.
A safe bike network would mean hundreds of kilometres of safe, separated bike lanes across Melbourne, including along key routes of St Kilda Rd, Chapel St, Sydney Rd, Royal Parade and Flemington Rd.
A safe pedestrian network would include new and improved pedestrian crossings, upgraded footpaths with more space for pedestrians and more accessible tram stops & stations.
By making walking and riding a bike safe for everyone we can cut carbon emissions, reduce the cost living, and make it easier to get around.
