Labor has announced they will abolish VicHealth, Victoria’s only health promotion foundation.
This matters because health promotion fights the influence of big corporations that make billions in profit from products that cause preventable diseases, like big tobacco, alcohol, and junk food.
VicHealth works on sun smart campaigns, they help people quit smoking and vaping, and they take on the major corporations who benefit from making us sick. Industries like big tobacco and junk food companies that Labor and the Liberals are too timid to oppose.
Now, Victorian Labor has decided to absorb VicHealth into the Department of Health, taking away their independence and ability to stand up to big corporations. This effectively means VicHealth will disappear.
But if we rally together, we can stop this from happening. I've written an open letter to the Premier urging her to reverse this decision.
Can you add your name to show Victorians want to save VicHealth?
Thanks for your support,
Dr Tim Read, MP for Brunswick

Open letter to the Premier of Victoria
CC: Minister for Health
URGENT: REVERSE YOUR DECISION TO ABOLISH VICHEALTH
VicHealth is a world leader in health promotion and the only health promotion foundation in Victoria. It’s been replicated across the globe and widely recognised for its pioneering work in preventing diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Now, your Government plans to absorb VicHealth into the Department of Health, taking away their independence and ability to stand up to big corporations. This effectively means VicHealth will disappear.
VicHealth funds the SunSmart campaign, they help people quit smoking and vaping, and they take on the major corporations who benefit from making us sick., industries like big tobacco, alcohol and junk food companies
Our government spends billions treating preventable diseases. VicHealth’s budget is just 0.15% of our state’s health budget, but their work can spare thousands of Victorians from the pain and costs of preventable diseases, and keep them out of hospital. VicHealth saves us money, and a lot of pain.
VicHealth’s work is guided by research, much of which they fund, into the food, economic and environmental systems that make us sick and how best to protect us from them. They embolden Victorians to take charge of their health through evidence-based health promotion, narrowing inequity in vulnerable communities.
Closing VicHealth is a false economy. It makes no sense to back away from prevention when you think about the growing cost of treating preventable diseases.
Victorians urge you to invest in prevention by reversing your decision to abolish VicHealth and guaranteeing their independence so VicHealth can continue the vital work of keeping Victorian families healthy.
