About this role

We’re looking for a statewide organiser to build a powerful grassroots movement in the lead-up to the 2026 Victorian State Election. You’ll recruit and support a statewide volunteer leadership team, help build local organising capacity, and support campaigns that grow our movement and connect with voters across Victoria.

In this role, you’ll train and mentor volunteer leaders to build Greens networks, support local teams to engage communities through issue-based organising, and step up and coordinate leaders and candidates for the State election campaign. You’ll bring strong relationship-building skills, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and be committed to building people-powered change from the ground up.

The Victorian Greens strongly encourage people with diverse lived experience to apply, such as First Nations People, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ folks, disabled people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, even if you feel your professional experience doesn’t match all of the selection criteria. The Greens recognise that structural barriers make it difficult for some people to obtain roles in the progressive movement. When assessing candidates we look at more than just the jobs you’ve been paid to do but the range of ways you’ve picked up skills and knowledge throughout your life.

Position description

In this role you will::

  • Identify and develop leaders: Build a team of local volunteer leaders across the state, develop their skills and mentor them as they step up to take on key leadership roles in our Branches and campaign teams.
  • Build our movement: Support this volunteer leadership team to develop and execute community organising strategies that will allow us to grow our movement and maximise the number of members and volunteers engaging with their community, running campaigns, and volunteering at polling booths.
  • Facilitate issue based campaigning: Support local teams to run or support impactful campaigns on priority issues that the Greens campaign on, in a way that builds power in the community, brings new people into the party, and builds the Green’s trusted profile on these issues.
  • Facilitate campaign tactics: Work with local teams you have established to support the execution of key campaign tactics, including scaled voter contact, community engagement, visibility and polling booth rostering.
  • Support training and leadership programs: Support training sessions, fellowship programs, and major training events, to build the capacity of our members, volunteers, campaigners and candidates.
  • Manage and report on organising data: Track movement data and provide regular progress reports regarding key KPIs across upper house seats.
  • Other work as needed: as a part of a small, agile team, you will be asked to contribute to other work from time-to-time, always with the support of experienced staff

Selection criteria

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have all of the relevant skills. We’re looking for someone organised and thorough and with passion for our movement, which we prioritise over formal education or qualifications.

We’re committed to diversity and supporting the right person to thrive in this role. For a confidential conversation about this role or the recruitment process, please contact Steph Zalakos via steph.zalakos@vic.greens.org.au or James Temple via james.temple@vic.greens.org.au

Key selection criteria:

  • Values alignment: Commitment to the Greens policies, charter and core values - ecological sustainability, grassroots participatory democracy, social justice and peace and non-violence - and a passion for our movement.
  • Strong rapport-building and relationship skills: You can quickly build and maintain relationships of trust in a local group and broader Greens community.
  • Strong leadership and persuasive communication skills: You’ll be able to inspire people to understand the possibilities of people-powered change and community organising.
  • Experience managing volunteers: including the ability to build and support teams, develop volunteers skills and bring out the best in each individual team member. Experience delivering training would also be highly valued.
  • Outstanding organisational skills: experience in managing people and logistics to tight deadlines, you thrive in a fast paced environment.
  • Experience applying best practice field campaigning techniques: from campaigning infrastructure systems (such as CRM’s and rostering tools) to organising strategies, to electoral and demographic data analysis and data driven campaigning.

Bonus points for

  • Lived experience or connections to First Nations justice, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ justice, disability justice or gendered justice movements.
  • Working with volunteers: Experience in a volunteer- or member-led organisation
