Hobsons Bay

This October, vote for a Greens Councillor who will work for our local community, put people ahead of profits, and take real action to tackle climate change.

Our achievements

In the last four years, Jonathon Marsden, our Greens Mayor and Councillor in the Strand Ward has achieved some incredible things. Here’s just some of the changes he led the way on achieving:

🔋  Began switching the Council fleet to electric vehicles and installed a public 50kW fast charger in Altona, Laverton and a third to be installed in Williamstown

We installed more than 240kW of solar panels in Williamstown Library, Altona North Community Library, Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre and Laverton Community Hub, saving 390 tonnes of CO2e per year

♻️ Led the response to the national recycling crisis by being the first Victorian council to fully implement a purple glass bin and a green food and organic waste bin, reducing waste to landfill by 37%

On track to be the first Australian council to build a Virtual Power Plant, which will see more than 3.6MW of solar panels installed across Council-owned assets, providing low cost green electricity to Council and the community

🌏 Declared a climate emergency in October 2019 in response to community demands to accelerate our adaptation and mitigation plans and to fast-track our emission reduction programs

🏡 Introduced strong Environmentally Sustainable Design standards into the planning scheme to ensure new developments are built sustainably

🔌 Shifted to 100% renewable energy for all Council operations

Your vote can help make sure Greens can continue to deliver the change you want to see in your community.

Our vision

While we have done a lot to date, we have challenging times ahead. In the next four years we will:

  • Tackle the twin crises of COVID and climate change head-on—we must act quickly on both to drive economic recovery, restore community wellbeing and create a safe climate future
  • Revive our high streets and support our hard-hit traders by reducing running costs and bringing shopping strips back to life with creative place making, safe streets fir walking and cycling and appealing streetscapes.
  • Build a Council-operated Solar Power Plant—the first council in Australia to do so—linking solar panels and storage batteries across the city of Hobsons Bay to provide low cost, green electricity to traders, community organisations, households and industry.
  • Fast-track our ambitious Urban Forest Strategy to plant 50,000 new trees
  • Safeguard our heritage from inappropriate development, retaining the village feel we cherish
  • Carefully manage our finances to efficiently deliver the many basic services our community relies on
