The Victorian Greens have welcomed the state government’s decision to scrap its proposed gas import terminal at Crib Point due to the damaging impact it would have on the environment.
The Greens say the proposal was a terrible idea from the start and that today’s announcement follows years of campaigning by both the Greens and the local community.
The Greens also acknowledge and thank Boon Wurrung Elders and Traditional Owners who have fought this project for so long, and who never gave consent for this project to go ahead.
Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell, was the first MP to speak out against the proposal back in 2018 when she joined the community in demanding that the project be scrapped.
The community wanted the government to protect the local environment and marine life over the profits of gas corporations like AGL.
Ms Sandell said that today’s decision was an important start, and that now the government needed to plan for a transition away from fossil fuels, instead of importing and burning more.
