Delays on West Gate Tunnel are further proof it was a bad idea from the start

The Victorian Greens have said the reported delays on the state government’s West Gate Tunnel project are further proof that it was a bad idea from the start.

Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins, said the tollway was always a self-serving project designed to benefit Transurban at the expense of Victorian drivers.

He added that once completed, the multinational company will continue to reap the benefits while thousands of new cars poured into the city will increase our city’s carbon pollution.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:

“The West Gate Tunnel has been rushed through with questionable benefits and now won’t be completed on time despite the government’s repeated promises.

“This tollway will pour thousands of cars into the inner city and is being paid for through a sweetheart deal the government struck with Transurban that will have Victorian’s paying over the odds for decades to come.

“Given the generous increase and extension of tolling revenue from the state government, I doubt any costs associated with delaying the project by a year will be of much consequence to Transurban.”
