Federal and state governments undermining climate action with bogus EV policies

2021-11-09

The Victorian Greens have said the Federal Liberal Government and Victorian Labor Government’s bogus EV polices are undermining the shift to electric vehicles.

The Greens say both parties are actively undermining action on climate change by lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to supporting an electric vehicle transition.

Earlier today the Federal Government announced its electric vehicle strategy, which rules out making EVs more affordable or setting standards for polluting vehicles.

And earlier this year the Victorian Government introduced what was deemed ‘the worst EV policy in the world’, by slapping a tax on people who drive them.

Victorian Greens transport spokesperson, Sam Hibbins, said the policies would be laughable if their implications weren’t so serious.

At a time when greenhouse gas emissions from transport are rising (and the fastest growing source of emissions in Victoria) our federal and state governments should be doing all they can to encourage the uptake of EVs.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:

“When transport is our biggest growing source of emissions our governments need to be adopting world best EV policies, not the world’s worst.

“Our state and federal governments are lagging well behind the rest of the world when it comes to the uptake of electric vehicles.

“Victoria has gone it alone on immediately introducing an EV tax and the federal government isn’t offering anything to make EVs more affordable.

“Our governments need to do all they can to incentivise EV uptake to reduce rapidly growing transport emissions.”
