The Greens will commit $500 million for a network of SmartBus routes to be rolled out across Melbourne as part of a suite of policies to transform Victoria’s transport system.
Some of the city’s busiest bus routes will be upgraded so commuters benefit from:
-
10 minute frequencies
-
Longer hours of operation
-
Direct routes
-
Real time information at bus stops
-
Road space and intersection priority
-
Electric buses
The Greens will also instigate a metropolitan wide bus review to provide more frequent and direct services and expand coverage to public transport dead zones.
Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for Transport, Sam Hibbins.
“SmartBuses are Melbourne’s bus success story, but no new routes have been added for almost a decade.”
“The Greens will upgrade some of Melbourne’s busiest bus routes to provide commuters with a quick reliable service in areas that aren’t serviced by trains and trams.
“We will also review all metropolitan bus routes to improve their effectiveness and increase coverage to public transport dead zones.”
Quotes attributable to MP for South East Metro, Nina Springle
“Many residents in the south east rely on buses as their only form of public transport, and they’ve been neglected by the current and previous governments. This is a solution to public transport dead zones that can be rolled out quickly and will improve people’s day to day lives immediately."
