The Victorian Greens have welcomed the state government’s announcement that it will fund thousands of new homes for people in need in the upcoming State Budget.
They say the announcement follows years of advocacy from the Greens and housing advocates and will help to alleviate the state’s current public housing waiting list, which is currently large enough to fill the MCG (100,000).
Victorian Greens acting spokesperson for housing, Sam Hibbins, said that after decades of neglect by successive state governments, he was pleased that the Victorian Government was using this once-in-a-generation Budget to make housing a priority.
He added that the Greens would continue to advocate for public housing until all Victorians at risk of or experiencing homelessness had access to a safe and secure home.
As part of their Green New Deal for Victoria, the Greens want to see 100,000 new public housing homes built over the next decade.
