Health worker 'allowance' finally backs up 18 months of frontline heroes rhetoric

2021-10-12

The Victorian Greens have welcomed news that the state government will provide frontline health workers with an allowance over the next four months to better support them to keep us safe.

Our hospitals are under more stress than they’re likely to ever be in our lifetimes and this financial support will help to ensure we retain our essential workers on the frontline of COVID.

Last week the Greens called on the government to provide something similar and say they’re pleased to see the government has listened.

Victorian Greens health spokesperson, Dr Tim Read, said it was good to see the platitudes we’d heard for the last 18 months about our frontline heroes finally backed up by tangible support.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for health, Dr Tim Read:

"It’s good to see the rhetoric we’ve heard for the last 18 months about our frontline heroes finally backed up by tangible support.

"Now is the time to do it, as hospital admissions will continue to rise even after our case numbers stabilise.

"The reality is our hospitals will soon be under more stress than they’ll ever be in our lifetimes, so this is a sensible investment to support our hospital and ambulance staff as they help to keep us safe.

"We’ve seen the stress our health workers and ambulances are under already. This is the least we can do."
