Labor must not bow to Catholic School demands

The Victorian Greens have called on the Andrews Government not to bow to the demands of Catholic Schools after the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria cried poor over an apparent lack of funding for capital works.

The Catholic School system is already on an especially good wicket in Victoria with a deal that guarantees independent schools receive 25 percent of every dollar of recurrent funding that goes to public schools. This does not happen in any other state.

“We have no idea how independent schools are using the money they receive from the State. The Greens moved an amendment for full transparency but this was blocked by Labor and the opposition.

“The primary role of the State Government should be to ensure our public schools in Victoria are of a high standard, and we know there are plenty of schools in need of upgrades and extra funding right now. As it stands we don’t know how state schools are being prioritised for upgrades, and the government refuses to tell us.”
