Liberals not fit for Opposition, not fit for office

2021-09-07

The Victorian Greens have said the state Liberals are not fit for Opposition or office, following this morning’s leadership spill.

The Greens say that at a time when Victorians are going through a once-in-a-generation pandemic, they need parties who are willing to put big ideas on the table, and work constructively in the Parliament while holding the Government to account.

Yet for the last 18 months the state Liberals have seemed more concerned with political point-scoring, jumping from issue to issue, as well as petty infighting.

And now they’ve voted in a ‘new’ Leader that demonised and exploited Victoria’s culturally diverse communities in his play for power last election, which proved to be an abject failure - both morally and politically.

He also preferred looking after his developer mates over helping Victorians.

The fact that today’s spill is the second attempt in less than a year makes clear that while Victorians are focused on getting through this pandemic safely, the Liberals are imploding.

Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said the state Liberals had long become a farce in Victoria.

She said it beggared belief that at a time when parties should be finding ways of supporting disadvantaged Victorians and keeping everyone safe, the Liberals were more concerned with playground politics.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:

"The Liberals are not fit for Opposition, and they’re not fit for office.

“At a time when Victorians need support and a bold vision for our future, the Liberals seem more concerned with petty playground politics than actual leadership.

“While it was hard to think how they could get worse, they just have.

“Without more parties willing to put big ideas on the table, and work constructively in the Parliament while holding the Government to account, the health of Victoria’s democracy is at risk.

“Victorians deserve better from their politicians.”
