Market-led proposals for transport infrastructure should be scrapped

2019-11-27

The Victorian Greens have called on the Government to scrap market led proposals for transport infrastructure and instead focus on developing a long-term transport plan.

Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins, said the Government had struck a sweetheart deal with Transurban when it could have instead been focusing on active and public transport solutions.

This week the Greens will move amendments in parliament to force the Government to produce the Victorian transport plan they are required to develop under the Transport Integration Act 2010.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:

“The West Gate Tunnel was designed to profit Transurban through a sweetheart deal that will result in Victorians paying higher tolls.

“The Victorian Labor Government should abandon the market led proposals process for transport infrastructure, and instead develop a transparent long-term Victorian transport plan.

“If Melbourne is going to remain a truly liveable city, it needs a long term, integrated plan that puts active and public transport first.”
