Almost 50% of morning trains breach load standard

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says new data obtained by FOI reveals that nearly half of morning peak trains breached load standards in the 2015 PTV survey.

“Raw data shows the government has been caught understating how overcrowded trains are,” Greg Barber said.

“This problem has been getting steadily worse for years. This problem hasn’t snuck up on the government, but their only response has been to rip out seats to squeeze more people in.

“Overcrowding dropped on some lines due to a drop in patronage, but forcing commuters back into their cars isn't the solution to this problem.”

Victorian Greens Spokesperson for Public Transport Samantha Dunn says new signalling is a necessity to get our state moving again. “It’s about time we moved into the 21st century and upgraded our antiquated signalling system.

“We know many Victorians want to swap their car for a train ride, but overcrowding and lack of services is making this an impossible task. Melbourne is a great city but our woeful public transport system is holding us back,” said Samantha Dunn.

“A modern digital system would allow us to run trains more frequently and safely.”
