Australian Government must break its silence on Palestinian killings by Israeli military: Greens

2018-04-04

Greens Leader Dr Richard Di Natale today called on the Australian Government to break its silence over the killing of 17 Palestinians late last week by the Israeli military.

“The vast majority of those participating in the March of Return to mark Land Day were protesting non-violently. The use of live fire and lethal force was clearly disproportionate and very likely illegal,” Dr Di Natale said.

“It’s disappointing but unsurprising that the Israeli Government has dismissed out of hand the need for an independent, thorough investigation. In doing so, it is not only ignoring the international community, but also Israeli human rights groups like B’Tselem.

“Australia cannot remain silent on this latest injustice. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop must speak out against this disproportionate use of force and urge the Israeli Government to facilitate an independent investigation.”
