Blood of slaughtered ducks will be on Labor's hands this season, Greens call for ban once and for all

The Victorian Greens have said the Victorian Labor Government will be responsible for every duck slaughtered this duck shooting season, after allowing it to go ahead in the first place.

Despite last year’s government-initiated inquiry recommending a ban on duck shooting, Labor refused to listen and instead greenlit another season, which will begin this week.

The Greens say Labor’s decision to ignore expert advice, and the majority of Victorians who want to see duck shooting end, means the blood of these precious ducks will be on their hands.

Victorian Greens animals spokesperson, Katherine Copsey, said Labor’s spineless decision to go against the expert advice provided to their own inquiry would now guarantee the horrific deaths of thousands of waterbirds.

She added that this season needed to be the last.

Premier Allan’s decision to support duck hunting is a bad call for a so-called progressive government, and it’s out-of-line with the desire of the Victorian community who want to see our native water birds protected, not slaughtered.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens animals spokesperson, Katherine Copsey MLC:

“If it hasn’t already been clear for years, the Victorian Labor Government couldn’t care less about protecting our precious waterbirds.

"In the midst of an extinction crisis and with thousands of waterbirds already under extreme stress, everyone knows duck shooting has had its day. Everyone except Labor, that is.

“The Greens will keep fighting to end this barbaric practice and recognise it for what it is: glorified animal cruelty.”
