Climate targets push action into the distant future

Greens environment spokesperson Ellen Sandell says the Government’s climate change targets push action off into the distant future and aren’t backed by plans to phase out coal.

"The announcement today is just more delay, with only voluntary emissions targets for industry and no actual policies to phase out coal," Ellen Sandell said.

"Action on climate change is urgent - just look at the bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef and the terrible floods we're experiencing. These are all consequences that climate scientists have been predicting due to global warming.

"If Labor is serious about climate change, they shouldn't just announce they will maybe do something by 2050. They must urgently phase out coal and set a strong renewable energy target now. They've had 15 months in office and we need strong climate policies now, not more delay,” she said.
