Donations reveal Labor-Liberal debts to property, energy and gambling

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says it’s a disgrace that it’s taken 19 months to find out who were bankrolling Labor and Liberal with donations in the lead-up to the state election.

"Global warming, transport, liveability, gambling: Labor and Liberal's policies in these areas have been 'auctioned off' to big donors even before we voted in the state election,” Greg Barber said.

"No wonder it's so hard to make progress in these areas. Companies expect a rate of return on funds invested and with a donation to a political party it's no different.

“We can't hope to address global warming while power companies and coal miners fund the election campaigns of Labor and Liberal.

"Property developers continue to rule the roost, while the liveability of our city is at risk.

"The scourge of gambling won’t be addressed while Labor and Liberal are addicted to gambling company money.

"Dan Andrews is dithering on donation reform. We support the Canadian system with donations restricted to individuals and a $1500 cap. If he brings such a law to parliament, we will vote for it.

"The Greens voluntarily disclosed all donations over $1000 before the 2014 Victorian Election. This should be enshrined in law so that voters know, before polling day, who has bankrolled the parties," Greg Barber said.

The Greens introduced a Bill to ban donations from property developers into parliament last year, but the Labor and Liberal parties voted it down without debate.
