Everyone benefits from safer, easier bike infrastructure

On Ride2Work Day, the Greens have called for a greater focus on cycling in the planning of our towns and cities.

“It makes sense to invest in infrastructure that encourages more people to get on their bikes,” said the Australian Greens transport spokesperson Senator Janet Rice.

“Better cycling facilities benefit people’s health, reduce pollution, ease congestion and create communities.

“All levels of government have a responsibility to make life safer and more accessible for people who ride.

“Tony Abbott had a love for photo opportunities on his bike, but that never translated to benefits for bike riders.

“We’ve heard a lot of talk from the new Prime Minister about improving the way our cities are run, but the picture is not complete without serious investment in cycling.”

Senator Rice, who was the co-ordinator of the inaugural Ride2Work program in 1993, will launch the Australian Greens’ new Bike Blackspot app for iPhone and Android on Saturday.

“The new app will mean all bike riders can share experiences of our nation’s Bike Blackspots and help us demonstrate why cycling funding is urgently needed,” said Senator Rice.

“By reporting potential improvements and danger zones in our local areas, we can build the case for substantial and sustained funding for cycling infrastructure across Australia.”
