Foreign-owned farm register a step in the right direction for farmers
The Greens say the activation of the new foreign-owned farm register is a step forward in safeguarding Australia's food security and the sustainability of Australia’s agriculture.
“The Greens have campaigned on a foreign ownership register for land and water over many years, and we’re glad that the government has come at least part of the way,” said the Australian Greens agriculture spokesperson Senator Janet Rice.
“Unfortunately, we still don’t have enough detail. We need to know who the companies are and what they own. We also look forward to the first publication of the register of water holdings, which the Greens worked for as part of the passage of the land register.
"As global warming and extreme weather events disrupt food production worldwide, it's critical Australia's agricultural land isn't sold off recklessly.”
