Gambling industry needs greater transparency

A new gambling report highlights that Casino gamblers are three times more likely to be problem gamblers and moderate risk gamblers than other punters, but the pracitices of these gamblers within the Casino remain hidden.

“This report shows that despite two decades of heavy gambling in Victoria and billions being lost every year at the Casino, Pubs and Clubs, we still know very little about the actual practices of these venues, about gamblers and the effect of responsible gambling measures,” said Victorian Greens spokesperson on gambling, Colleen Hartland.

“This is a massive cover-up by the industry and the government to the detriment of the community.”

“We need to shine a massive light on the industry to expose the dodgy practices that lead to people spending more than they can afford.”

“The report confirms that people who gamble at Casinos are more likely to be high risk gamblers, yet successive Victorian Governments have given the Casino many exemptions from responsible gambling laws.”

“Not only does the government rely on gambling taxes, they have also committed to pay Crown Casino compensation for any responsible gambling reforms introduced. All this creates a massive perverse incentive for the government not to make reforms to clean up this dodgy industry,” said Ms Hartland.
