Government refusing to clean up political donations

Greens MP Sam Hibbins has called on the Government to explain its refusal to toughen political donations laws, in light of new revelations that Liberal donors benefited from Napthine Government decisions at Fishermans Bend.

“There is a stench hanging over the Victorian parliament," Sam Hibbins said.

“It’s accepted that property developers are buying influence with the Labor and Liberal parties. New revelations show Liberal party donors directly benefited from the previous governments contentious decision to rezone Fishermans Bend.

"Victoria’s political finance laws are amongst the least regulated in the western world, but neither the Labor or Liberal parties are willing to even acknowledge there is a problem.

“Banning developers from lining the pockets of political parties would be a step towards restoring trust in politicians. Bringing disclosure thresholds down to $1000 to match other Australian states is also long overdue,” he said.
