Greens move to ban cruelty

Victorian Greens animal welfare spokesperson, Sue Pennicuik will move amendments to a government bill to amend the prevention of cruelty to animals act in state parliament.

The Greens amendments are to ban sow stalls, battery hen cages, de-beaking of hens and to ban jumps racing under the act as it is in NSW.

'While the amendments in the government's bill do make improvements to the act, there is still a long way to go in Victoria and most Australian states in terms of preventing cruelty to farm animals and horses," Sue Pennicuik said.

"Battery cages are banned in the EU and some US states. Sow stalls are banned in the UK and parts of Europe and the US with New Zealand moving too.

"The community wants to see these cruel practices outlawed but our governments are not acting.

"Jumps racing only occurs in Victoria and Sth Australia. It is banned under the NSW prevention of cruelty to animals act and should be banned in the same way in Victoria too," she said.
