Greens candidate for the upcoming Prahran by-election Angelica Di Camillo has announced a local initiative for further upgrades to South Yarra train station, which is one of Melbourne busiest stations.
The upgrades would see a new accessible overpass at the northern end of the station, as well as two new station entrances at ground level on Yarra and Station streets, which the Greens say will drastically improve the current foot traffic and congestion inside the station.
The plan has been costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office which estimates the total estimated investment would be $95.5 million.
In 2021, the Greens secured upgrades that reduce passenger overcrowding and improve accessibility including a refurbished concourse area, additional ticketing gates and a wider station entrance on Toorak Road.
South Yarra is one of the busiest stations in metropolitan Melbourne and the population continues to grow in the adjacent Forrest Hill high-rise growth area and there is still significant congestion as a result. The new entrances would significantly improve access to these growth areas north of the station.
As a local herself, Angelica Di Camillo knows how desperately the community wants to see further upgrades to help tackle the congestion issues at South Yarra station and that’s why these upgrades will be one of her top priorities heading into the upcoming Prahran by-election on February 8th 2025.
Quotes attributable to Greens candidate for Prahran, Angelica Di Camillo:
“Upgrades to South Yarra station will be one of my top priorities heading into this by-election. Thousands of people in our community use this station everyday and that’s why it’s essential it gets the attention it deserves.
“Thanks to the Greens, we’ve seen some improvements but now it’s time to finish the job and make sure that commuters in our electorate have an efficient station that encourages them to keep using our public transport system.
“As a local myself, I want our community to thrive and to do that we need more voices outside the two major parties to be a strong voice for our community, that’s why we need to vote Green.”
