Greens push Labor to keep deficit levy

2016-04-21

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said the Greens have forced Labor to consider making the deficit levy permanent and called on both Labor and the government to commit to making the deficit levy permanent, as well as establishing a millionaire’s tax.
“For a while now, the Greens have been calling to make the deficit levy permanent, and now finally Labor is on board,” Mr Bandt said.
“I welcome Bill Shorten confirming that Labor will consider making the deficit levy permanent.”

“The Greens believe the upcoming Budget and election should be about addressing growing inequality and not be turned into a tax cuts arms race.”
“By making the deficit levy permanent and establishing a millionaire’s tax, the Greens will raise the revenue our schools and hospitals desperately need and help close the growing gap between the rich and everybody else.”
“Together, these measures would bring in over $4 billion over the next four years.”
The Greens’ millionaire’s tax would create a new tax bracket, where people earning over $1 million a year will pay an extra 5c of tax on every dollar over $1 million.
