Greens say airport rail overdue

2017-04-07

Greens Prahran MP Sam Hibbins says the state government needs to drop its opposition to a train line to the airport, even if Labor's Transurban overlords don’t want it to go ahead.

"The world's most liveable city should definitely have a train to the airport, but Dan Andrews and his government insist the gridlocked Tullamarine road is good enough,” Sam Hibbins said.

"Airport rail needs billions - not millions - to make it a reality. It’s time the state and federal governments commit to work together to build this vital link.

"The federal government previously touted cash for South Yarra Station but we've ended up with nothing. Any feasibility study should look at South Yarra to Melbourne Metro interchange to provide for a direct South Yarra to airport connection

"The Victorian government will pay a political price if they keep blocking this vital project. There is a burning anger on the ground and this issue could decide the next election," he said.
