GREENS SLAM LABOR’S PLAN TO FAST TRACK NEW GAS DRILLING IN THE MIDDLE OF A CLIMATE CRISIS

2024-12-12

The Victorian Greens have slammed Labor’s plan to fast track new gas drilling and development in the middle of a climate crisis, saying that Labor’s plan to ‘slash red tape’ is a code word for gutting oversight and regulation of polluting industries like gas and burning rubbish waste.

The world has already hit 1.5 degrees of climate change and basic climate science tells us that we cannot have any more new fossil fuels at a minimum.

Labor also plans to cut the number of business regulators to the lowest of any state or territory - potentially putting health and workers rights at risk.

The Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell said that the move is reckless and that clearly Labor are listening to billionaires and the fossil fuel industry, not science.

Quotes attributable to the Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell:

“It’s official: Victorian Labor is taking its order from coal and gas billionaires and fossil fuel corporations.

“We are in the middle of a climate crisis, yet the State Labor Government wants to ramp up new gas projects across Victoria and significantly decrease regulation and oversight of some of the most polluting industries.

“This is a total betrayal of young people and future generations who will inherit the worst of the climate crisis, while Labor is giving in to the fossil fuel corporations who seem happy to let the world burn.”

Quotes attributable to Greens candidate for Prahran and environmental engineer, Angelica Di Camillo:

“No wonder Labor is not running a candidate in the upcoming Prahran by-election, with appalling climate policies like this.

"People in the inner-south of Melbourne want action on climate change, yet Labor and the Liberals are in lock-step supporting big gas and fossil fuel companies who are causing the climate crisis.
