Greens vote down Turnbull government’s attacks on Australian shipping

The Greens, Labor and Senate crossbenchers have prevented the government’s attacks on Australian coastal shipping by voting down the Shipping Legislation Amendment Bill 2015.

“The Senate has done its job in blocking this government’s misguided deregulation agenda,” said Senator Janet Rice, the Australian Greens transport spokesperson.

“This is a win for all the local, skilled people working in Australian maritime industries and for Australian coastal shipping operators, who will retain a level playing field in a fair competitive landscape.

“I commend the maritime industry, unions and experts who worked constructively to point out the flaws in the government’s legislation.

“The Greens have listened and voted to make sure Australian coastal shipping remains strong and to protect local jobs, national security and our marine environments.

“The Turnbull government must take this as a message to stop attacking people’s rights at work and start making constructive moves to grow our maritime industries.”
