The Greens today said the proposal from local traders in Richmond to support a supervised injecting facility for the area and not simply CCTV cameras was worthy of consideration to help deal with drug issues present in Richmond.
Greens Yarra Councillor Misha Coleman said:
“We welcome this constructive proposal from local traders and believe it is worthy of very serious consideration.”
Greens Federal Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt MP said:
“For a long time I have been concerned that only putting up CCTV will just push drug deals and drug use into neighbouring residential streets.”
“I urge the Victorian Labor government to consider this proposal.”
“Richard Wynne’s proposal of pressing ahead with CCTV cameras only will just push the problem into the yards and streets of the local residents that he represents.
Victorian Greens Spokesperson for Health Colleen Hartland, said:
“The retailers want it and the data on drug overdoses show the community desperately need it.”
“We know that more people are dying in Richmond from illicit drug overdoses than anywhere else in Victoria. We know that usage is impacting on those who want to enjoy Richmond’s vibrant street culture and restaurants. We need action.”
“Evidence from the Kings Cross trial proves that the streets are safer and there are have been no deaths in the centre. The Victorian Labor government needs to drum up some political courage, and do the right thing.”
