Greens welcome Victoria Police pledge to improve its mental health response

The review into mental health issues in Victoria Police led by Dr Peter Cotton has revealed a culture of entrenched stigma within Victoria Police about mental health issues that must be urgently addressed.

“It is clear from the review that police management has not put in place the necessary measures to prevent mental health problems or to provide the level of care and support required when officers present with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, or substance abuse,” Greens Police spokesperson, Sue Pennicuik said today.

“I have raised these issues in parliament and welcome the commitment of the Chief Commissioner to implement all 39 recommendations of the review,” Ms Pennicuik said.

“The revelation that some managers have adopted harmful attitudes to mental health problems, have tried to shift the blame from the workplace to the officer, and have used disclosure against the ongoing employment and promotion of officers is most concerning.

“The implementation of all 39 recommendations and changing attitudes will take time, but will lead to a comprehensive and hugely significant change in addressing mental health within Victoria Police,” said Ms. Pennicuik.
