Greens Women Take the Lead

2016-11-17

Greens women across the state are stepping up to take the lead in local government, with three taking on a Mayoral position, and another two elected deputy, following a ground-breaking council campaign.

After our biggest ever local government campaign in Victoria that delivered 29 councillors, up from 17, Greens women across the state are stepping up to take on a leadership role in their councils.

In Indigo Shire, Councillor Jenny O’Connor has been elected as Mayor for a two year term. Yarra and Darebin have elected Amanda Stone and Kim Le Cerf respectively, and Kat Copsey in Port Phillip and Samantha Ratnam in Moreland have been elected to represent as Deputy Mayor.

“Greens women in Victoria are truly leading the way,” said Willisa Hogarth, Victorian Greens Convenor.

“It’s heartening to see that across the state, more than 40% of Mayors are women.

“We’ve still got a long way to go to achieve gender equality, but I hope that these women can prove to be great role models, empowering other women to stand for election at every level of government.

“As a party, we’ve long championed for more women in leadership roles, and continue to develop ways to support women standing in elections at any level. We are thrilled to see the hard work and passion pay off for new and returning councillors”

Congratulations also to Councillor Stephen Hart, who was first elected to Colac Otways Shire in 2004, and has been elected as Deputy Mayor for the fourth time.
