Greer’s transphobic views perpetuate discrimination
The Greens say the transphobic views of Germaine Greer show that she is out of touch with the community on this issue.
“Greer’s views highlight the misinformed and transphobic comments many gender diverse people face every day,” said the Australian Greens spokesperson for gender identity and mental health Senator Janet Rice.
“These sorts of comments can be very damaging to gender diverse communities, especially those who are thinking about transitioning and worried about the discrimination they may face.
“Such transphobia can be extremely detrimental to the mental health, personal relationships and life opportunities of people who are gender diverse.”
Senator Rice applauded the work of gender identity support services, which act as valuable social and support resources for gender diverse Australians.
“Groups like Transgender Victoria and YGender are doing fantastic work in the community and we must be doing all we can to support their efforts,” said Senator Rice.
