Kevin Andrews out of touch with community on Doncaster Rail

2016-07-27

In an article on 25 July in The Manningham Leader, the Liberal Federal MP for Menzies, Kevin Andrews, has trashed Doncaster Rail and spruiked discredited road projects. Samantha Dunn, Greens MP for Eastern Metropolitan, refutes this poor understanding of local transportation needs.

"Doncaster Rail is the only way to provide fast public transport for Melbourne's east, an area that is under serviced by public transport relative to the rest of Melbourne," Ms Dunn said.

"The rail line is the only way to reduce travel times for motorists on the Eastern Freeway by reducing traffic congestion during peak hours. The median of the Eastern Freeway has been reserved for Doncaster Rail and proposals have been in development for over a century. It is well past time this critical public transport link was built.

"The State Government should respond to community wishes and fund the next stage of feasibility planning and technical studies.

"There is widespread support for Doncaster Rail amongst the community and local government. The Eastern Transport Coalition, representing approximately 1 million residents in seven local government areas to Melbourne's east, has been advocating for Doncaster Rail for years, and have a credible plan for it to be constructed by 2030."
