Knights and Dames: back to square one – now Turnbull must show leadership

2015-11-02

Australian Greens Leader Richard Di Natale has welcomed the abolition of knights and dames from the Order of Australia, but says Australians deserve so much more from their new Prime Minister.
"I'm pretty underwhelmed that Malcolm Turnbull's first big break from Tony Abbott is on the matter of honorifics," Senator Di Natale said.
"It says something about the standard of leadership in this country that installing knights and dames was one of the most significant acts of our former prime minister, and undoing that folly is so far one of the most significant acts of our new one.
"I'm glad they're gone, but getting rid of these honorifics does nothing to take on the big challenges or opportunities before us as a nation.
"Now that knights and dames are out of the way, how about Mr Turnbull dumps Tony Abbott's pathetic climate targets and takes something meaningful to Paris?"
