Labor's 'spineless' decision will send thousands of waterbirds to slaughter

The Victorian Greens have said the Victorian Labor Government are cowards if reports are true they plan to green-light yet another duck shooting season across the state.

The Greens say Labor’s decision ignores the expert advice provided to their own government’s inquiry into duck shooting, and will guarantee the horrific deaths of thousands of waterbirds.

Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said it was a sad day for waterbirds and the majority of Victorians who wanted to see duck shooting end once and for all.

She added that the new Premier’s decision was not one of a so-called progressive government and revealed the power of the shooting lobby over Labor.

The Greens will continue to fight for an end to the barbaric practice of duck shooting, and warn that if Victorian Labor refuses to change its tune, Victorians will fight with their votes at the next state election.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:

“How spineless do you have to be to go against the expert advice provided to an inquiry you set up?

“If it hasn’t already been clear for years, the Victorian Labor Government couldn’t care less about protecting our precious waterbirds if it means the shooting lobby gets its way.

“In the midst of an extinction crisis and with thousands of waterbirds already under extreme stress, everyone knows duck shooting has had its day. Everyone except Labor, that is.

“They refuse to stand up to the shooting lobby that is banking on cowardly decisions to keep this harmful industry in business.

“The Greens will keep fighting to end this barbaric practice and recognise it for what it is: glorified animal cruelty.”
