Greens animal welfare spokesperson Sue Pennicuik says allegations made about treatment of animals at the Lost Dogs Home reinforce the need for an independent regulatory body for animal welfare.
“Allegations reported in the Age about conditions at the Lost Dogs Home will be of great concern to all Victorians,” Sue Pennicuik said.
“A whistle-blower has alleged dogs are kept in pens for long periods without exercise and routinely given large doses of drugs.
“These reports raise the question of how closely the department has been monitoring the welfare of animals since its investigation into the Lost Dogs Home.
“The Greens have been calling for an independent regulatory body for animal welfare to oversee the welfare of animals in the racing industry, on farms and in facilities such as the Lost Dogs Home,” she said.
