Media Alert: Greens MP to observe the opening of the cruel Victorian duck shooting season

2018-03-16

It is so very disappointing that the Andrews government has allowed a full, 12-week, duck shooting season to go ahead this year when studies show that water bird numbers are declining across Australia, Ms Pennicuik said today.

“Last year thousands of ducks and other birds, including rare and protected species were massacred at wetlands near Kerang, leading to a review of the Game Management Authority, which is meant to regulate duck shooting.

“The independent review found that "non-compliance with hunting laws is commonplace and widespread" and that the GMA has failed to enforce the hunting laws, confirming what I and many others have been saying for years and is a key reason why duck shooting must end,” Ms Pennicuik said.

“The majority of Victorians, including in regional Victoria, are opposed to duck shooting. It should be banned, as it is New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland,” Ms Pennicuik said.
