Mining royalty increase should fund energy transition

Greens energy spokesperson Ellen Sandell says revenue raised by increasing mining royalties should be invested in transitioning Victoria’s energy supplies away from fossil fuels.

“If we have any hope of avoiding climate change, coal needs to stay in the ground and the Government needs a plan to close our dirtiest coal plants,” Ellen Sandell said.

"Coal companies should pay more for the damage they do to our climate and health, but the Government shouldn't base its budget on profits from an industry that needs to be phased out.

"Labor should use this money for a fund to close coal plants and transition the community and workers to new clean industries,” she said.
