Overcrowding worst on Geelong trains

2015-09-25

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says new V/line data reveals Geelong’s peak hour trains are full but the government has no plan to increase capacity.

“The latest data shows many peak hour trains are standing room only,” Greg Barber said.

“These figures show Geelong is a special case, with worse overcrowding than other lines.

“It’s great that people are catching the train, but services need to keep up with demand.

“Five years ago V/line told the government that trains would be standing room only from the opening of the Regional Rail Link. The government has been caught out without a plan for expanding V/line services to keep up with urban growth.

“The government should be urgently ordering more train carriages to meet demand across all our regional train lines.

“Building more trains, trams and buses in Victoria would create jobs for auto industry workers. The skills are easily transferable and the suppliers are often working for both industries,” he said.
