Police need to enforce laws to protect cyclists

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber says Victoria Police need to do a better job of enforcing road rules to protect cyclists.

Police reports obtained by the Greens show the majority of motorists aren’t issued infringement notices after causing crashes involving bicycles.

“The Government say they want to get the road toll down to zero, but that won’t happen if the police fail to prosecute,” Greg Barber said.

"Police reports show that infringements aren't issued in the majority of crashes involving bicycles.

“Even when cyclists report an incident, the police often fail to investigate or issue a fine.

"It’s a serious matter to hit somebody with your car. The police should make motorists more accountable for crashes they cause," he said.
