Put our money to public transport, not more toll road disasters

The Greens have welcomed the Turnbull government’s removal of the ‘East West Link or nothing’ conditions for federal infrastructure funds, but say the money must go to fixing Victoria's broken public transport system.

“Victorians rejected the East West Link resoundingly and it's time we got on with building the public transport infrastructure that will unclog our city,” said Victorian Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens spokesperson for transport and infrastructure.

“Now that the money is ‘unlocked’, public transport must be first on list, not put off for another toll road such as the flawed Western Distributor.

“Building more roads to reduce congestion is like loosening your belt to cure obesity.

“Melbourne Metro Rail should be on the list before any new roads are considered so we can remove cars from our congested city, not add them.”
